Thousands of Brits have been stranded and at least seven people killed by America’s worst snowstorm in decades.
Snow up to three feet deep covered much of the north-east US yesterday, with 75mph blizzards expected to cause massive new drifts tonight.
More than 4,300 flights, including 33 to Britain from Boston and New York, were cancelled as five states went on emergency alert. Heathrow said at least two US departures were axed and urged passengers to check before setting off.
“Snowstorm Nemo” cut power to half a million homes, with cities at a standstill. In Boston, Massachusetts, an 11-year-old boy died when snow trapped exhaust fumes from his father’s car where he was sitting to keep warm. Governor Deval Patrick banned all traffic across the state, for the first time since a monster blizzard in 1978.
Victoria Beckham, who is at New York Fashion Week, tweeted a snap of grafitti in the snow saying “I love Snow York.”
- Two inches of snow is forecast for central and southern England tonight.
